Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. While she was a small girl, she struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word"association. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she didn't fit in. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
